Free Summersville Pattern From Moda!!

Hello there fellow lovers of fabric! It's been a while since we have posted any project suggestions. I know that sometimes it's hard to get started on one without a wee bit of inspiration. Hopefully this will get your creative juices flowin'.

This is a quilt I did using the free Moda Summersville Pattern. These are all fabrics I have collected over the years, and finally decided to put to good use. I'm sure there are many of you who are guilty of hoarding stacks of fabric just like me. The designers of these range from Jay-Cyn, Echino, Denyse Schmidt, Robert Kaufman Solids, Riley Blake, Ana Maria Horner, etc.

The pattern is for a 72"x 72" quilt, which was a bit too big of a quilt to make for the pieces of fabrics I had in mind to use. Also contrary to the original pattern, I added a few strips on the bottom and top of my quilt. My quilt came out to be about 64"x 48."

The little Echino bird added to the center of the diamond on the picture on the top left side is actually covering a mistake of mine. Nobody is perfect :)  My triangles were ever so slightly off center, and being very annoyed with that slight imperfection, I decided to appliqué on a beautiful bird. 

For the backing of my quilt I took all of the leftover pieces of each of the prints, cut small strips, and sewed them all together. If you are suddenly inspired to perhaps quilt your very first quilt here is a tip you should never forget: the backing, as well as your batting needs to be larger that the quilt top. This allows for the fabric that is taken up during the quilting and for the stabilization when using a quilt frame. I recommend adding 6"to both the length and width so you have an extra 3" all around.
