My mom taught me all types of hand stitching but never sewed with a machine. Once I learned to sew in 6th grade, she and my dad bought a brand new Singer machine with all the bells and whistles and built a sewing area in our basement so I could sew to my hearts content!

My mom sewed a LOT! At one point she sewed costumes for 2 dance studios and one summer she let me sew a set or two of costumes (alongside her) so that I could earn some money (and I bought an aquarium!). She would also put in all my zippers over the years. ;)

My mom tried at various times in my life to teach me to knit, sew and crochet. Finally, in my early 20s, I was interested in learning something, and she taught me some basic crochet stitches and we'd crochet at her chemo appointments.

What's funny is I thought she got interested in crafting after her kids were all older; actually, she'd been interested in it since she was a girl and just put it on hold while she raised the four of us.

My fondest memory is probably my first. For Christmas, when I was 8, my mother had her old Singer reconditioned and gave it to me. The machine was probably from the 60s, I recall the old wooden cabinet and the knee pedal that operated it, and it had a lever to select the stitch length, and decorative stitches could be created using plastic discs. That year my grandmother gave me a sewing basket she made, with a pair of antique Wiss shears that I still use today.

My mother was a painstaking seamstress. Her work looked equally professional from the inside out, and that has always been the standard to which I have tried to hold my sewing. She was also a perfectionist, and took ages to complete a project. This was probably why I became such an enthusiastic seamstress at a young age, because I was impatient and wanted to wear things right away rather than waiting for them to be perfectly created by my mother. All of these things have served me well in my sewing.

Even though my mom did not get into sewing as I did, although her mom
(my grandma) and her older sister were avid seamstresses. I do remember when I was in first grade (four decades ago) that she gave it a try. She used a girls' size 6 Simplicity pattern, patiently cut the pattern and fabric, and sewed me a basic sleeveless dress that I liked wearing at the time. Now, reflecting back to it, I was proud of her for trying something she was not comfortable with. Now, she is proud of me for creating outfits for her, myself, and my daughter.

My mom would sew late at night for my brother and I. I would crack my bedroom door and watch the light flicker from her sewingtable light to the hallway. The old sewing machine would make the tabletop lamp jump up and down. I'd watch the "jumping" light on the hallway ceiling, and wonder what magical creation by mom would be making for me. I'd pretend I was up for a bathroom break several times to see if I could get a glimse of the surprise, but she was on to me :)

Wow...my MOTHER? She couldn't thread a needle...or didn't want to. BUT she had a HUGE appreciation for the textile arts. My greatGran was a seamstress in Chicago for the 'ladies of the night' and some of the clothes are now in the Textile Museum in Seattle. In her old age she made whole cloth quilts of satin for all the kids...we adored them. My grandmother was a tapesty stitcher. We have pillows and fireplace covers galore that have been handed down. My mother always had a sewing machine but I don't believe it was ever used until my sister and I were in HomeEc. Both of us are now quilters and my mother loved it. But it definitely skipped a generation!

My mother was a crafter all her life, but it wasn't until I got into quilting just after high school that she was bitten as hard by the same bug. She had a particularly rare combination of dual auto-immune disorders that made it very difficult for her to do activities of any kind, but she found that the Baltimore Album style of quilting was her forte. We spent hours picking out blocks for a theoretical bridal quilt for me one afternoon, before I'd even met my future husband. She died 4 months before he and I were married, but the memory of that afternoon lives on in the quilt top she completed just before her last days. I am slowly hand-quilting it, and think of her with every stitch.

Apparently when my dad heard my mum scream, he quickly grabbed hold of me and rushed me out of the house before my mum oould kill me.

I have lots of fond memories of my mom crafting when I was young. She seemed to always be staying up late working on a "secret" project for one of us. Many of my favorite dolls and doll clothes were crafted by my mom. And most recently, I spent some time visiting home last summer with the goal of having my mom teach me to knit socks. Success! I love that we share the love of crafting...we don't get to see each other as often as we wish we could, but when we do see each other, we are often surrounded by fabric or yarn...with needles (sewing or knitting) in hand.

My mother taught me how to crotchet when I was younger. We would sit and do it together for hours. Even making up our own patterns. It was fun times!

Making little patchwork pillows with some of her fabric scraps. I must have been 8 or 9, and not the excellent sewer she was, so my pillows eventually came apart. But I loved having homemade purses and things while I was growing up!

My mother did not sew very much, but I do remember her sewing up octopus costumes for me and my twin sister so we could participate in an elementary school parade.

While my grandmother was an avid knitter and sewer, My mom, who has passed away, was not. However, I do remember her helping with crafts as a kid. My fondest memory is of taking crayon shavings and melting them between 2 sheets of wax paper. I loved the way it smelled! I haven't thought of that in a long time... Thanks!

My mom and I trying to sew ready made bias on christmas placemats for a school fundraiser, and having to buy them ourselves because they looked so awful...but we still use them every Christmas, and laugh at how bad they are.
