Of course I have to be difficult with my answer, I love doing both. In fact, I often "wing" changes even while I'm using a pattern. Perhaps it's an issue with following rules?!

*My word verification for leaving my comment here today is zardle. I had to share it because I think zardle should be a real word don't you?

Perfect colors! I prefer to use a pattern as a guide, and do what I want after I understand the process. I don't like store bought patterns because I don't understand the lingo. Etsy patterns are perfect because a fellow human being wrote them :)

Oooh, those colors are so PRETTY. Perfect for spring! In terms of using patterns or not, I do a little of both. I use existing patterns for more complex things, like shirts and purses with lots of pockets and other features (though I often make minor modifications to the patterns to suit my needs). For simpler stuff, I tend to wing it, now that I'm more experienced as a sewer. I recently made my first pattern-free skirt and I love it. It fits me better than any pattern I've ever made, and it's exactly what I wanted, to boot! I like web tutorials for this -- things that give me the basic steps, but leave most of the measuring and drafting up to me.
